The preceeding story ('A Harbinger of Tragedy' by Patricia McKnight)
got me to thinking about how and why Bail Organa was smuggling 800 cases of
TP (or personal hygiene sheets) to Alderaan. The following is a quick and
amusing look at a day in the life of an Alderaani senator.
Necessities of Life
by
Lynn Colemann
Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan received a call in the middle of his
busy day.
"Senator, this is Pas Talkor of Shipping and Receiving over at
Imperium Industries." Bail knew that meant he was talking with the Supply
Officer of the Rebel Alliance.
"Yes, Mr. Talkor, what can I do for you?"
"Senator, we received that latest shipment you sent to us, but we're
missing item number 95-10545 - eight hundred cases. Was that a backordered
item? I'm asking only because it wasn't marked as such, and if that is a
discontinued item, I'm afraid there's going to be a lot of uncomfortable
people."
Bail checked his inventory codes. Yep. Backordered. "I'm sorry Mr.
Talkor. That is a backordered item. How badly do you need it?"
"Well, Senator, I think I can safely say that our present supply will
last us no more than a week and a half. Maybe two weeks, but I wouldn't
count on it."
"I will do all I can to assure the timely delivery of that item to
you."
"Thanks, Senator. Thanks for your time. Goodbye."
Damn! That particular item was always the hardest to find - and in
such quantity. He started checking with his black market suppliers.
The first person he spoke with told him no, there wasn't any
available for several sectors around, not even if he paid double. It just
wasn't to be found.
He went a little further afield. This contact indicated that for the
right price - read quadruple what it was worth - he could get it from
someone who could get it from someone else. Bail thanked him politely, and
declined for the time being.
This time, his call went to the limits of the week and a half delivery
time, allowing for difficulties. He had to find it here.
"This is important, I need it immediatly."
The supplier shrugged indifferently. "I'm sure I can get that
quantity for you, but I may have troubles getting it shipped to you in that
time."
"I'll pay any reasonable unreasonable fee you want to charge me. I
need that shipment."
The supplier shrugged again. "I'll do what I can. You'll get my
bill." He broke off the connection with a braying laugh.
Bail fumed. He knew that his supplier would be able to get a
transport for the goods, but just wanted to jack the price up as much as he
could. He sighed. Ah, well, at least he knew it was on the way, even if he
would have to pay through the rear for eight hundred cases of personal
hygiene sheets.
